Located south of Butte, Mt., about six minutes from the interstate, this local park makes for a great stop if you are traveling either I-90 or I-15. Thompson Park offers over 25 miles of trails to explore, picnic or just take a break from the car. While walking the trails you will have opportunities to cross over a 600-foot trestle or walk under the mountains in tunnels, remnants of the old Milwaukee Railroad that used to lay here. The park is surrounded by the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, the largest National Forest in the state on three sides, so camping sites are not far away.
Our favorite trails in and around the area are Blacktail Trail, Pipestone Trail and the Sagebrush Flats. The tunnels and trestle are along the Pipestone Trail.
